Things to do in Coldwater this winter

Coldwater does not hibernate. When the lakes freeze and the snow piles up, here is where to go, from a theater built in 1882 to a cardboard sled race.

1. Winterfest

Coldwater's winter party is free and usually lands on a Saturday in late January. The date goes up on the City of Coldwater's events page. Expect cardboard sled races on Kiwanis Hill, sled dog demonstrations, wagon rides, and free hot cocoa and s'mores. In 2026 the cold moved most of it into the recreation center, but the sled races went on outside, as they should.

Want to race? Watch for the free sled-building workshop in the weeks before.

2. A show at the Tibbits Opera House

Downtown Coldwater's theater was built in 1882 and is one of the oldest working theaters in Michigan. Check the Tibbits calendar for winter concerts and family shows. Once it opens, make it a night: dinner at Locally Social before the show.

3. The Children's Museum of Branch County

The Children's Museum has hands-on exhibits, warm rooms, and a place for small people to use up the energy a snow day builds. A good answer when the sledding hill is too cold.

4. Ice fishing on the lakes

Branch County has more than 100 lakes, and a frozen one is an invitation. Only head out once the ice is safe, and bring a Michigan fishing license.

5. A winter walk at Heritage Park

Heritage Park's paved trails are just as good with a little snow on the sides. Bundle up, walk a loop, and come home to something warm.

6. Stock up for a snow day

A snowed-in weekend calls for a roast in the oven or a pot of chili. The Locally meat counter is open now, and you can order ahead so it is ready when you get here. Need an idea? Locally Recipes has a few.

7. Coming soon: Locally Social

Coldwater's answer to a long winter is on the way: golf simulators all year, axe throwing, darts, a pickleball court, food from the kitchen, and a full bar, all under the same roof as the market. Winter golf leagues are planned.
